Photos Revisited

I’ve been a little lazy, I have not made any new photos…… my excuse, well I don’t really have one. I could say it was the weather making me feel flat, or that I’ve been busy with everyday tasks or maybe I haven’t had the funds to buy film, Oh thats right I mostly shoot digi now… so no excuses. The good thing that comes from my laziness is that I get to rummage through the archives were I get the opportunity to revisit my past.

Most people that know me, know that I have traveled to India on several occasions. The following photos where made in 1997 – my first trip to India giving a taste of daily life in India and Srinagar, Kashmir, one of the most interesting places in the world.

Girl in fishing village - Dal Lake, Srinagar Kashmir

The Dal Lake has many houseboats but on my last trip I noticed the decay of the majority of them. They are a unique accommodation and it would be a pity to see them in disrepair. - Dal Lake Srinagar, Kashmir.

Shikaras, long narrow boats are the main form of transportation on the Dal Lake

Helmet Newton

One of my favorite photographers is Helmet Newton, he was one of the masters of fashion photography. I recently finished reading his revealing autobiography, it was a fascinating glimpse into this very interesting life.

I wish I could afford his titanic book SUMO measuring 50 x 70 cm  and weighing approx 30kg, the thing comes with its own stand. When it was first released it was almost affordable, today you need over $13,000…..I’ll get one when I win Lotto . Oh side tracked back to the autobiography I found the book very entertaining and I especially like the insight he gave about his life in Australia and how he met his wife Alice Springs (June Newton).

200 Faces Exhibition

Late last year I started a project for the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre called  ‘200 Faces’ my goal was to capture the essence of Liverpool Australia for the city’s bicentenary celebrations, the project was carried out over about 6 weeks where I visited Liverpool residents in their home spending time with each subject to capture the faces that make Liverpool so distinctive.

Liverpool has many unique faces because of  it’s cultural diversity. As I have grown up in the area and also worked as a press photographer for a local newspaper I have seen the many new and interesting cultures come in, and have had the privilege to meet some very interesting people.

I also want to thank my wife Michelle for all her help and inspiration, she kept me focused and on track…….you have no idea how difficult that is to achieve.

The work will be on exhibition at the Casula powerhouse from February 6 until April 11
